Remembering the wisdom of the past and updating it.

When we deny one aspect of life, sooner or later we notice the price, personally and culturally, of our blindness. The Eastern cultures have exclusively mastered the inner life, but this has been accompanied by material poverty. We in the West have exclusively mastered the outer life but ended up with spiritual poverty. In both instances, achievements in one direction led to suffering in the other. That is why the East is now witnessing a rise in materialism, and the West is now experiencing a rising interest in the mind and spirit. In each case the forgotten half of the human experience eventually reasserts itself as our life force continue to seek a balance of inner and outer that alone can lead to sustained health, happiness, and wholeness.
We do not need to invent something new; we merely need to remember the wisdom of the past and update it for our time.

Taking a moment to reflect on my level of wellness; physically, psychologically, and spiritually.

1. Based on your reflections, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being optimal wellbeing), where do you rate your A-physical wellbeing, B-spiritual well-being, C-psychological well-being? Why?

Physical wellbeing- I rate myself at a 91/2. All of my life I believed in the body, mind, and spirit as a whole. I always feel connected to a higher power. As I walk through life I feel that I am on a mission to spread positive vibes. I exercise on an as needed basis; however, I do believe that it is necessary to use my mind and spirit to complement my body. I think a certain weight limit and my body adapts to that. I do not live to eat I eat to live. I detoxify to get rid of toxicity and stretch and always maintain a good posture. I am balanced.

Spiritual wellbeing- I rate myself at a 9. I believe in prayer. This is my connection to the Higher Power. I believe that I was created to be a positive change on earth. I always feel relaxed and elated. I pray within myself and stay grounded. Sometimes I feel so light, so relaxed, that is when I know that I am in tuned with what I called the spiritual forces of the universe. It is the feeling and knowing that this class is a part of my spiritual journey.

Psychological wellbeing- I rate myself at a 9. I allow some behaviors and attitudes to affect me. Some people behaviors that are not nice affect me and I cannot be around them. I read and listen to music that keeps me focused on being positive, powerful, and highly effective in this life. I practice what is necessary to rise above life adversities because I have learned that this too shall pass.2. Develop a goal for yourself in each area (physical, spiritual, psychological).
Physical goal- To exercise at least two times a week.
Spiritual- Meditate on a regular basis and make an area for relaxation.
Pshychological- Read uplifting books, listen to music and relaxation techniques at least three times a week.
3. What activities or exercise can you implement in your life to assist in moving toward each goal?
Physical- Walking
Spiritual- Prayer and meditation.
Psychological- Reading, listening to music and relaxation exercises.

4. Complete the relaxation exercise The Crime of the Century. To hear this exercise, click here. Describe your experience. (What it beneficial? Frustrating? etc.)

My experience with the relaxation exercise was wonderful. I was curious about the title. How could that title help me? I do not even like to think about crime. Anyway, I turned it on and started to smile once I heard the music. I am always captivated with voice tones that can take you to a relaxed state. My body, mind, and spirit began to smile. I was at work and my supervisor looked at me constantly while I was doing the exercise. The area was very quiet. I started to focus on my breathing and let go of my thoughts. I love this because it puts me in such a deep state of relaxation. It is awesome. I was relaxed and enthusiastic at the same time. I yearn for this. My body became more relaxed as my head almost fell on the table. The rainbow meditation can really help me use my imagination to relax. I thought for a minute that the colors were too bright and it would make me hyper instead. Not so. I focused on my breathing once more and listened to red being very rich, deep, and vibrant. It meant to feel grounded, safe and secure and comfortable. I thought it and felt grounded. Orange- vibrant color, bright, feeling centered, confident and self worthy. He was talking about me. The region was the lower stomach which is center of the body. I felt centered. Yellow symbolized that you feel loved by people, friends, family and the environment. I always feel loved. Emerald green symbolized the ability to share love, sharing very positive feelings. I sent a positive thought to my friend. I exhale and repeated, “I choose to love.” He was talking about me again. I do choose to love. Aqua blue is my ability to feel willpower and creativity and that I can accomplish what I need to in life. I massaged my throat and wanted more information on the throat region. The forehead color was indigo blue, rich, deep, and beautiful. Balance within self. Tap into conscious and unconscious. Tap into body wisdom. I feel balanced. The crown of the head had a bigger circular shape. This was feeling connected to a bigger part of the universe, nature, friends, animals, and family. You feel very much at peace. I was very relaxed as I thought that I feel connected, my body is calm, relaxed, and peaceful. I locked the feeling in my memory bank so I can bring it back when my body becomes tense or just to relax.
This was very beneficial and I learned a lot about colors and their association with the regions of the body. Overall I felt peace and wholeness with the exercise. The colors representing the body regions were new to me. The color red being so vibrant is reserved in my field of child care. Orange and bright yellow causes excitement. Indigo blue, violet, and aqua blue are calming. The writing of this exercise was very relaxing also. This made me realize that I am transforming and it’s a work in process. I love life and growth.

  2. Hi Jan,

You sound like you have a very balanced and effective strategy towards your physical, spiritual and psychological well being. I was walking regularly five times a week before the weather got too cold, so I've switched my routine to aerobics three times a week. Perhaps twice a week for exercise is what you can fit into your schedule, but may I suggest adding an extra day? It will help you to burn excess calories more and help your body to increase metabolism. As our body ages, metabolism has a tendency to slow down. It takes rigorous, continuous cardio activity to increase it. So, adding just one extra day will give your body the time it needs to make the necessary adjustments. A pedometer and a journal will help you to see just how far you've walked and as time goes on, you can make personal goals to increase steps and distance as you go along. I love your spiritual goals! By designating a special area for solitude, it is much easier to get into a relaxed mode for meditation or prayers. I have an area I have in my home for quiet time as well and it does help to put me in a solemn mood to engage in prayer. I also think your psychological goals of self help books and listing to music are very positive activities. In my free time, I am currently reading, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey. It has some strikingly similarities to what we are learning in this course. If you have any other recommendations on self help books, please share them with me because I always have a desire to improve myself as a human being as we all are seeking to transition our lives with a quality of human flourishing. I think your goals would definitely be beneficial to my patients now and in the future. I admire your courage and your strength! I wish you well on your journey to live and grow. Blessings to you!
